As long as I’m resurrecting various hobbies and activities, for anybody that is curious, I’ve got a game design that I’ve been working on that’s pretty far along. I’ve been blogging about it on my other site, with the articles available here. I actually just made what I think is potentially a very cool rules change, and I can’t wait to try it out. OK! Let’s crank up the tunes!

Rocket From the Crypt, “Birdman”

For most of the summer, I’ve been listening to a lot of punk and various punk-inflected rock bands. It’s kind of me circling back to one of my forever loves in music, driven by discovering see/saw. It’s a genre that really just kind of thrives on execution, which is funny for a genre with a reputation for sloppiness. But execution doesn’t mean precision, just that the band’s songs, energy, and approach have to be aligned for things to really work.

Think Tree, “Everything Is Equal”

This is extremely college radio circa 1991. If you wanted to know what that sounded like. (Nobody should.)

Portishead, “The Rip”

Portishead put out an absolute stone-cold classic in Dummy and a fine follow-up, Portishead, before disappearing. Nobody really sounded like them then, despite plenty of people trying. But, surprisingly, they weren’t actually done. 11 years after their second, they put out Third, and there’s still nobody sounding like them. The album isn’t really the same cinematic trip-hop that they used to make, instead blazing their way into a brand new direction. I’m not even really sure how to describe it, honestly. I guess it’s just experimental rock? For a band that was always an outlier, Third is the outlier-iest.

Jungle Fire, “La Kossa”

Jungle Fire, out of LA, play Afro beat and funk, clearly heavily inspired by the usual folks like Fela Kuti and James Brown. Nothing wrong with that! Anyway, this is from their 2017 album on Colemine records, and I really appreciate the drama of this. There’s a lot of Kool & the Gang that I hear, and that works for me.

Lee Alan, “Set Me Free”

Look, not every single Motown put out during their heyday was a slam dunk. But even the goofier ones are still short, at least.

Well, the Public Enemy intros were fun for a while. I’m a little disappointed we didn’t summon any PE. Oh well. Here’s today!https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLexe714An2Qj2ckZ0tlku3JJQbEgfzSmQ

Death Cab For Cutie, “Little Fury Bugs”

Sorry, dozed off for a second there.

Whores., “I Am Not A Goal-Oriented Person”

Fuck yeah noise rock! If I had started this thing in 2009, I’d probably have a Tumblr called exactly that. But this is not that world, so I just have to resort to blurting it out here for my reader/listeners. Who I suspect would all agree with the sentiment! Also, “I Am Not A Goal-Oriented Person” is an excellent song name.
