Coil, “Dark River”

Coil is one of the most interesting bands to emerge from the original industrial scene, where they quickly went off in their own direction. By the time we get to their third proper album, Love’s Secret Domain, there wasn’t really anything industrial left. Instead, we’re left with creepy, gothic, atmospheric stuff that filters electronic music through a cracked mirror. It’s one of their essential records, and there’s nothing else really like it.

Phoenix, “Long Distance Call”

The alchemy on this song of the durms and that slow bleat on the keyboard is kind of magical. This entire album is chock full of fun pop rock.

Ruder Than You, “Misskaculation”

Does it get cornier than this? It does, once I tell you that this album is called Horny For Ska.

Little Otis, “Baby I Need You”

Early Motown here, from 1962. Pretty by-the-numbers, but pleasant enough. This was actually the B-side, so it makes sense that it’s not totally a barn burner.

Five Songs, 6/25/2017

Some unrepresentative tracks today. I’m always tempted to link out to other songs for bands, but I usually restrain myself, telling myself that they’ll come up again. This is probably a dumb policy! Music is over here.

The Dillinger Escape Plan, “*#..”

This track, with the ominous intro and escalating drums, is really designed to lead into the ferocious “Destro’s Secret”. Standalone, like this, it’s all foreplay and no climax. Oh well.
