The Smiths, “Miserable Lie”

The first Smiths album is the one I really don’t listen to very much at all. I tend to want to belt along with the songs in my best Morrissey impression, and for that, I know the last few albums much better than this one. That’s not a judgment on the quality of it or anything, just a recognition that I listened to The Queen Is Dead in high school enough to know the songs perfectly.

Five Songs, 7/27/2021

It has been about a month since I’ve written one of these. How is that possible, with me not missing a day? Prior to going on vacation for a while, I had piled up a bunch of pre-written posts for you all to enjoy (?) while I was out. And then, when I got home, I managed to goof up my media server and then completely trashed the hard drive where all my music was stored! But I’ve replaced the server, restored my backup, gotten everything rolling, and I’m back in the saddle! The month off will do me good, I think. Let’s see!

Five Songs, 4/9/2021

Monobody, “Country Doctor”

Monobody is one of those bands that has a real mismatch of names. For whatever reason, I don’t think this should be a math-rock/post-rock kind of band. “Monobody” seems like it should really be a garage rock outfit, all galloping guitars, distortion, and sneers. No horns should be involved.

Quelle Chris, “Guns”

The title track to his 2019 release, this was one of the best hip-hop albums released that year. The sort of dream-like production really sets off against the serious subject matter of the lyrics. A great album.
