The Flaming Lips, “The Sparrow”

King’s Mouth: Music and Songs is a bit of a return to a previous style for the Lips, sonically sounding a lot more like The Soft Bulletin than The Terror. But it’s also a big concept album, and I think that gets in the way of the songs, and not only that, the songs themselves feel just a bit forced to me. It just all kind of seems like a bit of a blurry copy of their mid-career stuff.

Jello Biafra with the Melvins, “Those Dumb Punk Kids (Will Buy Anything)”

Just a classic punk gallop here from the Melvins, with Jello’s warbling shout in fine form. Delightful stuff.

Polyrhythmics, “Cracked Pepper”

Those muted horns coming in at :32, that’s just lovely on top of this languid groove. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it agian: we need more horns in music. Gimme some grindcore with a trombone tearing it up. Some hardcore with someone on a trumpet blaring along beside it.

2Pac, “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”

All Eyez On Me represented 2Pac’s commercial peak, with the double-album selling tons of copies driven by “California Love”. Of course, it would be the last album he would make while alive, so we don’t know what he would have done after moving on from G-funk. If he’d been alive, there would have actually been many fewer 2Pac records, as I think he would have just moved on to acting and not much music would have been released. Instead, essentially every noise he ever made on tape would eventually get released.

Here’s today!

Nickel Creek, “You Don’t Know What’s Going On”

This project has now gone on long enough that I can’t really remember which bands I’ve introduced and which ones I have not. And, honestly, it’s not reasonable to assume everybody has read/listened to every one of these. So, if I happen to repeat myself on anything, I apologize, but let’s just pretend that it’s because I felt like enough time had passed and not because I have a tenuous grasp on my marbles.

Hey, if anybody is curious what stuff I’ve bought on Bandcamp, you can see my profile here. The top eight are the ones I picked up yesterday. Here’s today’s music.

Future of the Left, “Failed Olympic Bid”

Glitchy and bloopy at first, and then pounding, this song is delightful.

Jello Biafra with the Melvins, “The Lighter Side of Global Terrorism (Extended Space-Melt Version)”

After the breakup of the legendary Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra has hooked up with a variety of collaborators for albums. He’s done pretty well picking those collaborators - Lard’s first album (with Ministry) was great, for instance, and I love everything Melvins. So, how is this album? Pretty good! It’s the Melvins with the usual unhinged Jello ranting on top. Both of their records are pretty fun. This track is actually an extended version of a song that appears on the other record, with a big ol’ freakout. I do love me some extended Melvins freakouts.
