Hockey Night, “For Guys’ Eyes Only”

[don’t mention Pavement don’t mention Pavement don’t mention Pavement]

Hey, that doesn’t actually sound much like Malkmus! It’s more like Spiral Stairs.

[nailed it!]

Beck, “Sexx Laws”

Midnite Vultures starts off like this, letting us know that we are in for Party Beck instead of Sad Beck. I like Party Beck a lot more, personally.

Cannibal Ox, “Ox Out the Cage”

It’s always fun to hear a record that still sounds fresh more than twenty years later. El-P’s production on this record is so good that it still sounds futuristic even after all this time. A great record!

ZGTO, “Remedy”

I don’t remember getting this, but I did pick it up on Bandcamp. It’s apparently a collaboration between electronic musician Shigeto and a rapper named ZelooperZ, neither of whom I’m familiar with. Probably bought this from a year-end roundup and didn’t give it a proper listen. Pretty good, though!

Hockey Night, “Greet the Dawn”

I long ago ran out of ways to say “this band sounds like Pavement” in a clever way, so: this band sounds a shitload like Pavement. Diet Pavement.

Invisibl Skratch Piklz, “Cocaine”

I need to go find some turntable artists operating today. I love this shit.

Gob, “I Hear You Calling”

The bit where the collapse the tune to just the main riff at :40 in, that’s such a pop punk cliche, and it works on me every time. Especially when the drummer leads out of it by opening up the high hat just a little? Some of these things are cliches for good reason.

The New Year, “Half A Day”

We just had The New Year on, uh, the New Year, so I won’t go over it again. Slowcore! It’s pleasant!

Marlowe, “The Places We Stay”

Marlowe is producer L’Orange and Solemn Brigham on the mic, here with a little instrumental track from their first, self-titled album. It’s a solid record, recommended particularly if you like L’Orange’s production. It turns out there’s a second album from them, I’m going to pick that up right now.

Gaunt, “Different Drum Machine”

Every time Gaunt comes up, I say more or less the same thing. But, dammit, I’m write. Gaunt should have been huge! This song is such a beast.

Snuff, “The Damage Is Done”

A minute and a half of just pure punk rock, this is plenty enjoyable. Just going to rip through five tunes today apparently!

The Cinematic Orchestra, “Man With The Movie Camera”

Or not! The Cinematic Orchestra are a jazz/orchestra that married cinematic tunes with, uh, jazz and some of the rhythms of dance music. It sounds like a soundtrack as created by a Ninja Tune band, which is pretty much exactly what it is. Very cool stuff.

Today!

The Beatles, “Two Of Us”

This is from the Let It Be…Naked reissue that was put out in 2003, where they (I assume mostly Paul) revisited the songs and stripped away most of the Phil Spector stuff. It’s most noticable on the songs that originally had all those strings, but overall, it’s a superior version of the album, as it lets the songs shine through more and just has less farting around on it.
