The first Boris album I encountered was Akuma No Uta after reading a good review of it online somewhere, and I was blown away. To have “Introduction” get followed by two absolute rippers like “Ibitsu” and today’s track, from the same band, I was just in love. Boris has paid that love back with a ton of classic records, many of them better than this album. But it’s still one I return to again and again, because your first album is often special with a band.

Danny Brown kicks off The Hybrid with a song called “Greatest Rapper Ever”, which is exactly the kind of hubris I like to hear from rappers. The album followed several mixtapes, and put Brown towards the front of Detroit’s rap scene. The album itself is plenty of fun, carried forward by Brown’s relentless energy.
[Read More]Yes, the band is named Skankin’ Pickle. No, there are essentially no depths that the third wave wouldn’t sink to in terms of naming themselves. Yes, this kind of sounds like an outtake from an early Chili Peppers album. But, you know what? They had some good tunes! They really did! One day we’ll get them (today is not that day).
Mike Park of the band also went on to found Asian Man Records, who are, somehow, still going. So have some respect! Or at least as much as you can muster for an outfit named “Skankin’ Pickle”.

Could have sworn we had Helms Alee in here earlier, but the index says no, and I trust it. Helms Alee are a Seattle noise rock band, playing a sludgy and yet still poppy kind of heavy music with fun vocal harmonies. I’d recommend everything they’ve done, with Stillicide being my favorite of the lot. This comes from Weatherhead, put out by the gone and lamented Hydra Head Records.
