Frank Black and the Catholics, “Bullet”

Frank Black went through a couple phases between v1 of the Pixies and v2 of the Pixies. After recording under just his own name, he apparently decided that his band rated a mention, and began recording as Frank Black and the Catholics. To my ears, this was the best phase of his post-Pixies career, and this record might be my favorite of the lot. There’s definitely plenty of the Frank Black madness here.

This is the same song that we had last time. I still don’t like it.

Unwound, “Summer Freeze”

I love the recording on the drums. Just listen to them, they sound so organic. This is from the tremendous Leaves Turn Inside You, a double album of art rock goodness. This song appears on the “Right” disc. I’ve always liked it when bands name the individual discs in double albums.

Queens of the Stone Age have released a trailer for their next record. I’m excited! Mark Ronson produced it, which might be really interesting. Here’s today’s tunes.

Helms Alee, “Revel!”

Could have sworn we had Helms Alee in here earlier, but the index says no, and I trust it. Helms Alee are a Seattle noise rock band, playing a sludgy and yet still poppy kind of heavy music with fun vocal harmonies. I’d recommend everything they’ve done, with Stillicide being my favorite of the lot. This comes from Weatherhead, put out by the gone and lamented Hydra Head Records.
