Murs, “I’m Innocent”

Murs found himself on Warner Bros for Murs For President, and he turned in a big album to celebrate. There are a lot of ideas, a lot of big beats, a lot of targets. It’s a good record, but it feels like it’s a little much.

Mayhem, “A Wise Birthgiver”

I went a little bit into Mayhem’s history the last time they came up, so I won’t repeat that here. I’ll just reiterate: these were bad people, and even this later version of the band contains folks like Hellhammer who have said terrible things and never really recanted past links to repugnant beliefs. I bought this album unaware of the band’s history outside of Vikernes and Euronymous. Knowing what I now know, I would have avoided it.

Albert King, “Born Under a Bad Sign”

Majestic. I’m just going to fuck this up if I try and write something.

Chemical Brothers, “Block Rockin’ Beats”

Last time we had a track from this album, I expressed mystification that the Chemical Brothers had a moment. But you know what? This song is a fuckin’ force of nature, of course it was huge. Listen to it!

Indian Handcrafts, “Starcraft”

We’re big fans of noisy duos here at Five Songs, so of course Indian Handcrafts is up our alley. They’re more towards the Melvins end of things, putting them in the vicinity of Big Business more than anybody. Big stoner vibes, and huge riffs. It’s impressive that this is just a guitar and drums.

Modest Mouse, “Fire It Up”

I really need to go back and re-evaluate this record. Given how much I like the previous three albums from them (and the various EPs), it wasn’t really fair to kind of dismiss the record after only a couple listens. Sometimes it’s easy to just move on when a record doesn’t click right away, especially for a band that you love, because you expect to love it right away.

Bergraven, “Ekot av bikt”

Black metal band out of Sweden that I otherwise know nothing about. I ended up with this from a blind sampler from Hydra Head Records. It’s got more melody than a lot of black metal going on here. I dunno, this is the first I’ve listened to this since I first got it, I think! Write your own review!

Bim Skala Bim, “Popcorn”

Bim Skala Bim checks in here with a little bit of an oddity from their final album, Krinkle. This is a cover, a version of synth pioneer Gershon Kingsley’s song. Bim Skala Bim didn’t often go for these sorts of covers, and didn’t record too many purely instrumental songs, so this is kind of a treat.

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, “Intro: A Song Of Fire And Wine”

My goodness, this is so corny. But, this song does set you up for the cheese sculpture that is this record, which is probably good. And I authentically love the album (So Divided), so I’m happy to hear this. I’m just bummed I’m not going to hear the rest of it right now.

Aesop Rock, “No Regrets”

Aesop Rock’s Def Jux debut, Labor Days, is widely considered to be his best record. It’s the one where the beats really started keeping up with his complex, wordy flow. Rock can be a little exhausting to listen to at times, but in the right mood, he’s a lot of fun.

Bim Skala Bim, “For The Turnstiles”

This track, from How’s It Goin’?, is an example of Bim Skala Bim at its best. A warm, organ-driven groove, some fun trombone bits, a cheerful tune - it’s just super pleasant.

Bim Skala Bim, “At Wo’s (Live)”

Mostly, ska bands are really fun live. Dancing is fun! But, you know, live albums are mostly pretty lame. This one is no exception. It took me a depressing number of years to finally figure out that I don’t really like live albums.

People Under The Stairs, “Hit The Top”

From Carried Away, a typically solid album from the act. Gotta love this kind of party rap. The lyrics in a typical PUTS song don’t amount to much, but it doesn’t really matter.

Another good one, as Five Songs continues its roll.

matt pond PA, “It Becomes Night”

A charming little pop song from matt pond PA.

Presidents of the United States of America, “Volcano”

Here’s a delightful song off that second album that the Presidents made that nobody really paid attention to. The loose charm is still present, the hooks are solid, and the wordplay is fun. Basically, this album is a goofball winner.

Another year-end roundup, this time from NPR. Meanwhile, another good set today. I feel like shuffle has been doing well for a little while.

Bim Skala Bim, “Shoes”

I’m surprised we haven’t seen Bim Skala Bim yet. One of the earliest bands of the third wave, arguably early enough to not be part of the third wave at all. They certainly reached their peak of fame during the third wave, though. With a stable lineup and an approach much like the 2 Tone second wave acts, they produced a solid series of records throughout the late 80s and 90s.
